It's hardwired and I mostly forget it's there. However, it'd very app reliant and has some annoying quirks. But it'd EXTREMELY reliable.

I’m looking into the Thinkware U3000 as it the same manufacturer who make the BMW Adance Eye.
I have a Thinkware 3000 and Powercell 8 external battery pack set up and it works great.
Physically I like it, it’s small and fits right under my rear view. Picture is great.

What I have (Thinkware F800 pro) is overkill, and I don't recommend it - especially for any modern car with crash-safety and red-light stuff.
Every Thinkware camera makes some kind of sound at boot-up.
Avoid Thinkware. They believe that an $800 dashcam failing under 3 years is perfectly acceptable.
