How DashcamRank Works
Where owner comments come from, how we turn them into shortlists, and what the numbers can — and can't — tell you.
Where the evidence comes from
Everything on this site starts with public owner comments from car, regional, and dashcam communities — places like r/Dashcam, r/dashcams, r/AskUK, r/australia, and r/CarsIndia. We read those conversations, match each comment to a specific camera, and check the hardware claims against a hand-verified spec sheet. When owner experience and the spec sheet disagree, we say so rather than smoothing it over.
What the numbers mean
- Mentions count how often a camera comes up in the comments we collected. A high count means "people talk about this," not necessarily "this is the best."
- Owner sentiment is our editorial read of each comment on a 1–5 scale. It reflects how that owner felt, in their own words. It is not a marketplace star rating.
- Communities tells you how many distinct forums a camera is discussed in. Broader support across communities often indicates a more reliable recommendation.
- Spec confidence grades how well each spec is sourced. High means verified against official listings; anything we couldn't verify is marked "not documented."
The DashcamRank shortlist score
The score you see on model pages and cards blends four things: owner sentiment (the biggest share), how often the camera is recommended, value at its recorded price, and how well its documented specs cover the basics. If a category can't be documented for a model — say, no recorded price — we leave it out and rescale the rest, rather than scoring it as zero.
Treat it as a shortlisting aid: a quick way to see which cameras hold up across several kinds of evidence at once. It is not a lab test, not a performance measurement, and not a marketplace rating.
How the buying guide chooses cameras
Each section of the buying guide answers a different question:
- Consensus leaders are the most-mentioned cameras — community popularity, plainly labeled.
- Highest owner sentiment surfaces the cameras owners speak about most positively.
- Highest DashcamRank score uses the blended score described above.
- Budget and hardware sections list the most-mentioned cameras that meet specific criteria like price or features.
We only include cameras with enough owner evidence to make a fair comparison.
What we can't tell you
- We don't test cameras. We measure what owners report. Nothing here is a lab result.
- Owners self-select. People post when they have something to say, and comments skew positive. We can't compute failure rates, reliability, or lifespan from them.
- Some cameras have thin evidence. These are flagged or excluded from rankings instead of padded with filler.
- Prices move. Recorded prices are incomplete snapshots, not current offers. Where we don't have a date, we say so rather than inventing one.
